This award was created to honor the memory of Gerry Holmes. Gerry was an outstanding volunteer with the Virden Indoor Rodeo and Wild West Daze as well as a number of other organizations.
Mona Kenderdine was involved with the Virden Rodeo right from it’s inception in 1989. Many of the rodeo volunteers specialize in one area and concentrate their efforts toward making that particular facet of the weekend a success. When you look over Mona’s list of involvements you realize she lent her expertise and enthusiasm in many different areas. Probably the area she was involved in the most was the chairperson of the dance and beer gardens. To many years to count according to Mona. She was chairperson of sponsorship for 3 years, and vice chair for for 2 years. She served one year as the chairperson of the Wild West Daze Weekend, 2 years as Vice Chair and 3 years as secretary. She was also Vice Chair of the Western Rodeo for 2 years.
But it’s the less smaller duties, none the lest important that exemplified Mona’s commitment to the Virden Indoor Rodeo & Wild West Daze.
She was canteen chair for a time, she booked the clowns, stock contractors, announcers, entertainment and was involved with the parade.
Setting up for the rodeo, putting in the chutes, pens, setting up the hospitality tent etc. is always a big job requiring lots of planning and grunt work. Cleaning up after the rodeo is more of the same and lots of bodies are required. Mona would always show up for both and then was responsible for providing refreshments afterwards.
With great pleasure and appreciation the Virden Indoor Rodeo & Wild West Daze presents the Gerry Holmes Memorial Award to Mona Kenderdine.
Award presented by Gerry’s children:
Kim Brown & Brent Holmes
