2014 GERRY HOLMES AWARD RECIPIENT – JOCYLYN HAGAN

The Gerry Holmes Memorial Award is presented annually to a Virden Indoor Rodeo and Wild West Daze volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to the event. This year’s recipient is Jocelyn Hagan.

This award, given under the auspices of the Wild West Daze executive, honours the memory of Gerry Holmes, whose contribution was exceptional and long standing.

Jocelyn first became involved almost 20 years ago, helping with the final setup for the dance, rodeo performances and sponsor supper, as well as the tear down and cleanup afterwards.

With her sons participating, she subsequently focused her efforts on the high school rodeo which takes place during the rodeo weekend.

Jocelyn became co-chair for the queen contest when it began. This involved developing the protocol and operating rules, obtaining sponsorship, and then overseeing the pageant itself.

In 2004, Jocelyn was elected president of the Virden Rodeo and Wild West Daze, a position she held for 10 years, stepping down at the completion of last year’s rodeo. She presided over the move into Tundra Oil & Gas Place, as well as the celebration of both the 20th and 25th anniversaries. All of this involved extensive planning and the coordination of some 400 volunteers. Jocelyn remains involved today, co-coordinating the Terry McLean print draw, an annual fundraiser.

Congratulations to Jocelyn Hagan on being chosen as the recipient of the 2014 Gerry Holmes Memorial Award.
