Gerry Holmes Memorial Award

The Virden Indoor Rodeo and Wild West Daze each year honors a volunteer for outstanding contribution to this event. This award is presented in memory of Gerry Holmes who for many years set an example of dedication to this weekend.

This year’s recipient is Herb Warkentin.

At first glance one sees Herb as the Parade Marshall. This in itself is a significant undertaking – publicizing the parade, contracting potential float entries, obtaining help to marshal the parade, are just some of the responsibilities. The fact that we have a very entertaining parade is certainly due in part to Herb’s efforts.

Herb carries out many other less high profile duties. He is in charge of the Virden Indoor Rodeo parade covered wagon – having it available and in parade condition for the various events – Santa Claus Parade, Thursday night down town festivities and of course the indoor rodeo parade itself, and then storing it for the winter. Herb has been a volunteer since the first rodeo 28 years ago. He has always been part of the set up crew and tear down crew – the times when the heaving lifting is required.

While still operating Warkentin Building Movers, Herb entered a float in the parade every year – usually one of the his building moving trucks, or sometimes his Demolition Derby Car.

He was a valued event sponsor right from the 1st rodeo- sponsoring the tie down roping – and when his son Wayne took over the business, he continued that sponsorship to the present day. After retiring and with more time available, he has willing taken on smaller odd jobs that are so essential to the big picture – fix a table, gate, door, erect signs, do a little painting, help with rodeo banners, look after committee shirts, and the list goes on.

Herb is accompanied in the carriage this evening by his son Wayne and his grandson Walker. The Gerry Holmes Memorial buckle is presented tonight by Gerry’s grandson Bo Brown.

Congratulations Herb on receiving the Gerry Holmes Memorial Buckle in recognition of your outstanding volunteer contribution to the Virden Indoor Rodeo and Wild West Daze.

Thank-you to Darryl Horn for escorting Herb into the arena and thank-you to the Flower Attic for Herbs boutonniere.
